Hey guys, my company has a F-550 four wheel drive crew cab flat bed ROW truck. i personaly think this truck sucks for what we paid, and its durability is very crappy. i mean its a nice truck when your driveing down the Highway to the job, but once you get on the right of way or anywere that is not paved it will beat you to death. To be honest im sick of haveing to stop and put the air compressor back on or pick up scattered tools! So i was thinking of buying a 2 1/2 ton military truck and putting a service body on it. Found a good truck For 5k with low miles and hours, Found a service body to go on it for free. Anybody think this is a good idea?

Sounds cool as he**. I wanted one years back and my dad dissuaded me. I think he was bitter with them from his army days.

"they will go anywhere son but you can't afford the gas or maintenance"

He claims they got about two miles a
Gallon and beat the kidneys flat outta ya. I'm sure some older guys will have a different view, and I'd like to hear it.

The 550 has a gvwr of like 17 something thousand lbs, its not a suprise the ride is stiff:confused2:. If your not carrying alot of weight go with something that has a softer suspension/more travel.

Guess you've never ridden in a deuce and a half. You will piss blood after a mile of highway.

no iv driven one for a while, but i put a air ride kit on it and cut the bed and made it a single axle truck, and if i get this one i plan on doing the same. so if i get it im gona put a air ride kit on it.

You already have the 550. Yes, they are set up to run loaded, so if you are running around with less than "a load" on the back, you aren't going to like the ride.

Rather than blow a bunch of money on something else, just buy a air-ride conversion kit. Not air helper springs, but rather, a kit to remove the leaf springs and install air springs in their place. There is a reason most big truck run air suspension these days.

Here is an example (but not the only option): Link - UltraRide, Chassis Air - Ford F450/F550 CC Heavy Duty

Also, they do make air seats for pickups now. I have considered a set in my 350 so the wife stops making that "uuugh" noise every time we hit a bump. ;)
