Biggest Hay Weekend in the USA!

There are more people mowing, raking and baling hay this weekend than any other time of the year. We have extended hours, and stay open Saturday May 24 and all day Memorial Day.

Pull that throttle back and make hay while the sun shines.

You can say that again. It's like a mad rush around here. With the weather scheduled to be nice for the next four days in VA the equipment is being pushed hard. Saw two big JD's and a older Ford mowing today.

Man I wish. I haven't even started yet. Seems like there is at least a 30-50% chance of rain nearly every day or two here in east central Missouri. I am hoping the first of June will bring some warmer drier weather.

I'm sitting waiting for it to dry out some still. 20% to 50% chances of rain until the middle of next week. A few(very few) bales have been done in this area so far.

Viginia has been cool but clear since Thursday with Sun/Mon. forcasted to be in the 80's. On thing I have noticed, is that I have only seen one guy using a tedder and he was using it on winter wheat no hay. All the hay guys have just been running moco's.

Note to self;

60 Year old me shouldn't attempt 10 non-stop hours of hayin' fun.

I'm flat worn out.

Baled with the "new" Massey Ferguson 24 baler for a couple hours, then swapped it for the ol' reliable Deere 336.

Conclusion? The Deere 336 is one heckofa baler even with a gazillion bales on the counter. The MF24 is a "good" baler, but not the equal of the 336.

More fun tomorrow. Time for a shower and 8 hours of comatose sleep.

In northeast Missouri we have had rain it seems every 3 days except for the 16th of May through the 22nd. Cut and baled hay then but drying was slow and had to add acid to make sure I didn't burn barn down. What a change in weather from the last 3 years as we could not beg, borrow, or steal a rain. I think I got lucky this time and as the old saying goes, even a blind hog gets an acorn once in a while.

All the guys I saw cutting over the last three to four days baled to day. Native grass and winter wheat all round baled. Not a tedder in sight except for one field that was cut two weeks ago and got rained on for three of four days. We purchased 6 bales from one guy for our horses and it looked good, just a bit green. We had some light rain tonight but no enough to ruin the rounds sitting in the fields.
