\"Billygoat\" Outback\" brush mower

I am thinking of buying a "Billygoat Outback" brush mower. how difficult is it to operate in somewhat rough hilly field with the odd ditch. I will need to cut fully grown grass (5') but no trees. I will need to cut close to Christmas trees so it should be easy to steer. (I can't have it jumping around). Any other comments on its performance or reliablity would be appreciated. Also, the names of any machines that would do the job faster, easier, more reliably or cheaper would be appreciated.

Re: \"Billygoat\" Outback\" brush mower

Hi Jim, I have some experience with the Billygoat, I rented one before I bought my tractor to do some clearing. I was initially disappointed because when I rented the unit I asked if there was anything I needed to take with me, and was told "no she is ready to go" My property is about 50 miles away from the rental place, so when I broke the belt that provides power to the drive wheels in the first 5 minutes of use I was somewhat upset. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That being said it was not the fault of the Billygoat, I went back and got a free rental the next weekend and (with new belt) the machine performed well.

It has two rear wheels and rides on a skid up front, the unit was amply powered and worked well. It was not difficult to control and was not overly fatiguing to operate. Anything I could push over, it cut, and all material was discharged in a safe manner.

Overall my impression of the equipment was favorable, I have not had an opportunity to try any of it's competition such as the DR field and brush mower, so I cannot offer a comparison.

Best of luck with your purchase.

Re: \"Billygoat\" Outback\" brush mower

Hey Jim, and welcome to TBN. When I read Bellville's reply, I thought I was reading my own story. I, too, rented a BG and took it about 85 miles. The belt didn't break, but I almost did. I mowed a few acres and that night was the most sore in my life. The machine did well, never bogging down in the tall grass & small brush. The few large rocks I hit did no damage to the mower. The experience did convince me, though, to buy a tractor. A CUT with a 48" deck gets me into some tight spaces.
