Since this is a tractor forum and a number of members here actually farm to some degree I thought I would ask this question. Has (or does) anyone ever thought of making their own diesel by planting soybean or rapeseed (or some other plant)?

Well I've thought of it but don't have a clue as to how to go about it. :) I'm sure it would be possible if you had productive enough land,

A friend of mine collects used cooking oil (many places give it to him). He has quite a filtering system to clean the used oil. He burns the oil in his forklift and his 1 ton dually. Both have been running just fine for two years with this fuel.

He built his own bed for the truck and in doing so, the bed has a tank for the oil. He still puts diesel in the main tank on the truck and can burn either fuel.

On the lift, he just puts the oil into the main tank. It is a bit slow to start, but once running ... no problems.
