I have a GT245, and am simply curious as to what the black cap on the top-left of the tranny is for. Owner's manual clearly states not to remove this cap, yet it must have some purpose.

Does anyone know what it's for? What would happen if this cap got removed? I haven't removed it, but there's no telling what the previous owner of this tractor might have done....

I think it is a vent cap.
Look in jdparts for an idea what is underneath it.

I suspect the owners manual just wants the owner to not think it is a dipstick or a place to add oil.

Which "cap" is it?

I think it's the part labeled "8" in the diagram.
