black smoke pto

I have a troy built lawn tractor, it runs great but soon as I turn on the pto for the mower deck black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the engine will sputter and seem like it is going to die. The black smoke is more than just a little.

Have you checked to see if all of the pulleys on the mower deck are working freely?

Check the mower deck for debris around the pulleys first, if that is clear, check the PTO. On my Cub Cadet, the bearings seized in the electiric PTO assembly and caused the same thing as yours.
