My Grand L has about 112 hours on it now, and I am getting some black smoke. Before it just smoked a bit when i was lugging it, but when the RPM's went up it quit, now it pretty much does all the time, its isnt a lot mind you but its a pretty steady flow, is this normal? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Check your air filter. At 100 hours the one on my 30 HP Kioti was pretty foul.

I agree with checking the air filter, in fact I keep a spare and swap it out every 50 hours. On my B7510 the filter is washable so I put one in, wash one and let it dry for a few days.

You might want to check the manual and see if your filter is washable. When I told my dealers parts man it was washable he said it wasn't. I finally showed him the manual, he was surprised.

I 3rd the aircleaner. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Black smoke = over rich fuel/air mixture and a clogged airfilter is the most logical (and easy to swap) choice.

At 100 hrs my BX23's airfilter was in bad shape also.

Good luck

Are the BX filters washable? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In a word, yes.

The WSM spells out how to service the airfilter element and I'll post a brief description.

Every 100 hrs inspect the element and clean the element if:
-When dry dust adheres to the element, useing compressed air blow from the inside out turning the element. Air must be under 30psi.
-When carbon or oil adheres to the element, soak the element in detergent for 15 minutes then wash it several times in water, then rinse it out in clean water. Let it dry naturally.
-Replace the element once a year or after every 6 washings, which ever comes 1st.

I blew mine out at 50 hrs and replaced it at 100. There was a very visable difference between the new and used when I sat them side by side. The attached pic shows a 100hr old element that had been blown out with compressed air at 50 hrs....

All that said, I recall a post by a Kubota tech that indicated that they were told not to even break the airfilter seal until the 100hr service or until the engine starts puffing black smoke because the element may not seal correctly if R&R'ed just for inspections. Apparently they are very concerned that the air filter elemnt may not have a good tight seal in the housing after repeated R&R'ing of it.
FYI & FWIW.

What Volfandt said.

If the air cleaner doesn't do it, you might also want to run a clean batch of fuel thru there before getting into fuel delivery system. Maybe run it almost dry and then tank up with fresh diesel. Plus a dash of power conditioner (white bottle) just to be fastidious about it.

I have problems with funky fuel if stored too long. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Tim Add a quart of ATF to 100 gallons of your diesel fuel. Your black smoke is coming from your plungers sticking open inside your injectors after top dead center firing. The indirect kubota fuel injection system is known for this phenomenon. The new direct injection engines will better tolerate ULSD ( ultra-low sulfur diesel ) and this will also keep your lube oil from turning black in 10 hours after a 100 hour change. Believe me a plugged air filter has nothing to do with it. A plugged air filter in time will actually suck itself together inside the housing and dust your engine. Try this trick until Kubota comes up with a better system.
