We get the occasional sighting, no telling how many we don't see - eek! Once smashed under a boot they look pretty much like any other spider. Glad you got the eggs too.

There in cool moist places if u know were they might be there. It hard to find. Dark corners of garage or shop, find them in the well house all the time.

I have a stacked landscape block wall in front of the house. Early in the morning I see them along the bottom of the wall in the seams between the blocks. Two weeks ago I counted 16 of them along the 80 foot wall, many with egg sacs that they carried out to dry in the sun.. That was too many for me so I sprayed all seams in the wall. Haven't seen one since.

Black widows, scorpions, and garden spiders all like to hang out around my well house because that's where I have an outside light and crickets and moths are attracted there. The spiders and scorpions are drawn to easy food sources.

What did you spray with? I need to at least spray my shop.

i sprayed with Permethrin that was recommended by the folks at Tractor Supply.
I mixed it according to instructions and sprayed it with my 2 gallon garden sprayer.

One summer I was working at Marysville, CA. We rented an apartment & there was a wood fenced patio with it. We let my 4 yr. old son play out there unsupervised as there was no outside access. One day my wife noticed a lot of spiderwebs around the edges, not easily seen. They were black widows, a lot of them. Manager had the area sprayed, but the kid wasn't allowed out there any more.

When I was a kid we had a block wall with a concrete cap on it. The cap wasn't well built & sections broke off, but stayed in place, so you could pick up sections of cap. You guessed it, black widows in the wall.

I found that wasp spray kills spiders; regular bug spray doesn't do it.

Several years ago we moved into our current house and had our first Halloween at the premises. Trick or Treaters came to our front door and asked for candy as is the custom. Toward the end of the night one kid saw a spider at the foot of the front door - Yes it was a black widow!

We didn't see as many kids at Halloween the next year.

Black widows: I have them in the shop and in the crawl space under the house. Rarely see them but they're there. Also wolf spiders in the shop occasionally. They're hard working predators. They don't bother me and I don't bother them.

Im not sure i've seen black widows on the west side of the cascades, but remember they were pretty common on the east side. Maybe too wet over here?

I used to live in Las Vegas. The black widows would be out early each morning along the foundation of the house where the siding started. As soon as the sun came up and it started getting warm, you never saw them. They really like the water meter pits along the roads. Nicotine will also kill them. Put a chunk of chewing tobacco in a gallon jug of water and let it set outside in the sun for a couple days. Then spray the liquid on them and around the foundation.. Also kills crickets and other bugs. Nicotine is a nerve agent and does them in quite quickly. Don't want to get it on yourself however as it is not good for you either.

I used to keep Black Widow spiders as a kid and fatten them up on crickets. They only live 2 years at most. And the biggest one I had only had a body a half inch across. Pretty critters though.

West of the Cascades: A friend who grew up in SoCal, so he knows what they look like, found some under his house in Battle Ground, WA. I suspect they were in household goods when someone moved, as I haven't seen one or heard of anyone else seeing any since I moved to western Oregon in '78.

The first two pics were taken on our back patio. My kids found it, and thankfully they are scared to death of spiders! It was disposed of shortly after taking a few pics.

The other I found when I opened the power box to plug in the plug for our camper at a campground in Illinois. A tad scary at first! That's why I always wear gloves when I open those boxes.
