Well I used a wooden block & my 18" breaker bar, got two off. The third one is rotating the spindle. Any suggestions? Do I buy the spanner wrench mentioned in the manual or is this the perfect reason to get an impact wrench?

You might be able to get something to hold the spindle from the top side while you try to loosen that nut, but if you have an air-compressor you need a good half inch impact wrench anyway. Just be sure you look at how many ft./lbs. of torque it produces. A good one should be over 400 ft./lbs., but there are a lot that "look" just as good, but are rated around 250 ft./lbs.

Yep Bird is right.

I had to hold a wrench on the top nut of the spindle, and also used a wooden block to stop the blade from moving. I had a heck of a time. Also remember when you put them back on to use the amount of LBS of pressure stated in the book. I'm sure you saw that, but I think it's pretty important.

If I hold the top nut on the spindle it simply unscrews that nut! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. According to the manual you are supposed to use a spanner wrench between the pulley and the deck. I don't have a spanner wrench & don't think I can substitute anything.

I guess I'll call my dealer to see how much the spanner wrench costs or if they even use them (vs. the impact wrench).

See below for a typical spanner wrench

Is the blade turning on spindle w/ bolt tight?
I just sharpened my 4 blades (84") and didn't have to hold blades.
1/2" impact buzzed them right off.
Put the block of wood against the shield or deck and the blade, it should come right off.
Never-seize on threads is a must.

The problem with spanner wrenches is that usually the handle is too short for adequate leverage. If you put a pipe over the handle, it is a pain to hold the pipe and spanner wrench in place while turning the nut.

Called the dealer. Asked about the spanner wrench. Took him a minute to look the number up. They have never sold one!!! He said they use an impact wrench. At home he uses a block of wood, socket & a piece of pipe. Leverage wasn't my problem.

The blade was NOT turning, It was stationary against the block of wood. The spindle was rotating as I turned the bolt.

Going to try some penetrating oil & the poor man's impact wrench (sledge hammer on my breaker bar). If that doesn't work I think I've got ample justification for the impact wrench. Not that I don't want one, just need to get approval from the CFO. Would be much easier if it was to work on her car not the "darn" tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Last year I spent three hours trying to get my blades off. Finally got fed up took it to the dealer and he had them off in less than two minutes with the impact wrench. Needless to say that was my next purchase.

Broke down & Bought an impact wrench since nobody at work had one I could borrow. Not that I mind owning one /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. Took less than 2 seconds to get the blade off. It's all about having the right tool for the job.
