The large nut in the second photo is the nut connecting the push rod to the piston inside the cylinder?
Answer: Yes that is what it looks like to me.
How does the cylinder come apart. Does the end of the cylinder near the push rod eye unscrew?
Yes the other end has what appears to be a cap. Their are two wholes in the end cap. I think that comes apart with a wrench that looks like a half moon and two studs on it. I am going to try to find one.
Or, was the end of the cylinder that blew off, secured with a large snap ring. I think I am seeing signs of a groove for the snap ring where the cylinder failed.
Answer: I do not think so. I will double check. The parts breakdown does not seem to see have that set up.
Did the backhoe get hit while it was swung all the way to one side?
Answer: No not at all.
