I presume the filter is on the return line from the directional valve.
If this is correct I would suspect flow surge pressure spikes potentially fatigued the housing. If splitting wood were the cylinder jumps when the piece splits causes flow surges. How much surge is a combination of several factors some of which are cylinder size, operating pressure, tank line size, filter size, etc. this is called decompression shock since there is a volume of fluid compressed which also stresses the splitter frame.
