Somewhere in the circuitry there is a pressure relief valve that is jammed.
Probably in the hydraulic control valve itself.
Possibly caused by crud and or corrosion.
Back years Jeep with certain motors would blow off filters and that was caused by front drive hitting the filter housing and jamming the pressure relief valve.

I presume the filter is on the return line from the directional valve.
If this is correct I would suspect flow surge pressure spikes potentially fatigued the housing. If splitting wood were the cylinder jumps when the piece splits causes flow surges. How much surge is a combination of several factors some of which are cylinder size, operating pressure, tank line size, filter size, etc. this is called decompression shock since there is a volume of fluid compressed which also stresses the splitter frame.
I have blown filters off presses in factories from this flow surge

Is this a factory splitter or a homemade job?
I put a shutoff valve on my return (between filter and tank) so I could change the filter without loosing any fluid.
When you arent paying attention and lean on the splitter and close that valve while it is running.....it does exactly what you describe.
Does it have a valve that you closed by mistake? or somehow pinched/kinked the return hose after the filter?

Did you add another valve into the system? If so did you set it up with PB?

Could be the filter housing was compromised by being hit with something and damaged, and it just decided to let go..... Would think bypass would have prevented it other wise....
