I call myself looking but can't seem to find the block drain plug. Top hose busted on 1700 and i have drained the radiator and overflow tank, this has some rust and or junk in it. Want to clean up some and flush, maybe w/ a std, flush or vinegar. Thanx

Look and see if it's just under side panel. Drains the radiator and block. Unscrew the bolt at the bottom.

What Carey said. Look for the small hose coming off the bottom left of the radiator. That small hose and a similar one from the block, both go down to a small block that has the drain plug.

Depends on the YM model. Some are the drain cocks with hose and others are a fitting with a hex plug. The location is in the sane area. ;)

I was assuming his YM1700 has the same drain as my and Carey's YM240/YM2000. (YM1700 is nearly identical just less hp). The owners' manual for these assume some owners will drain the radiator until next year's rice tilling season, so the drain is designed to be readily accessible on these. It's in the area below the oil filter.

i did find this and drain it, but only a qt. came out. It did overheat and was shut down fairly quick, i noticed a lil' smell and saw brown water being throwed out of side cover. Didn't notice temp. light either, But i am ordering parts and maybe new radiator from Hoye next wk.. I didn't see two hoses into one before the drain plug, may have to take cover off? What about a flush, will vinegar do or use Preston flush, it had a lot of rusty gunk in btm. of overflow btl.. Seen little on YT.
Thanks jim

That's the drain fitting. Pull the side cover off to verify there's a hose from the block into that fitting, and verify it isn't plugged.

If the first owner just put in ditch water temporarily for the week that he tilled, that block and radiator might have a lot of mud settled to the lowest points.

Personally, I wouldn't use vinegar. There is enough chemistry going on that I wouldn't want to chuck acid at it.

I would flush with water until clear, and then flush with something like Prestone to break up and suspend any remaining gunk. In bad cases, I have been know to run water in the drain port and disconnect the lower radiator hose.

If it was brown to begin with, if it were me, I wouldn't necessarily assume all of your gunk would fit through tubing.

All the best,

Peter

Finally able to go look and from the Bottom left of the Radiator to the top of the valve. Bottom hose to the Eng. Block. See the hose clamp attached to the outlet of the Block. Just behind the Alt.. Org Radiator for me so if you don't have the outlet there It might have been Rebuilt/Replaced Radiator.

Vinegar (white) is fully compatible with our old school Yanmars as they were made before the OAT formulas. It's been the main staple for several decades. The Prestone flush would be the 2nd choice or a follow up after the vinegar 1st flushing.

Indeed flush and re-flush. Typical tap water with other impurities lead to this galvanic corrosion in the cooling system. Always use distilled or RO water to refill the cooling system 50/50 with antifreeze. Or just do the Prestone 50/50 pre-mix.
