Do I have to go to a JD dealer to get a block heater?

Probably not. With help from Mechanos here I found a Zero Start block heater for my 955 on the web. The Zero Start catalog/applications guid is here:

Phillips & Temro - Catalogs

Find the tractor or engine you have then search the web for the Zero Start part number. There are lots of resellers of the Zero Start block heaters.

Like others, I subscribe to the notion the JD resells the Zero Start product in a $50 John Deere box.

Have you looked at the one John Deere offers for the 2720? It is P/N AR87167 and sells for around $75. It looks fairly easy to install.

The JD heater is way easy to install. Pop out the freeze plug and bolt it in.

That's not bad... I found it for $26 online, but by the time you add on $6 or $7 for shipping it's right around the price at O'Reilly's. Of course, I did save the sales tax too.

It is exactly the same part you'd get from JD... right down to the color of the cord connector. But you will have to learn to live without that fancy $50 JD box.
