When I bought this last year the man told me I had to turn the key to just before starting my question what does the switch on top of the ignition do? does that turn the heater on?.
I think the switch may be for either work lights or 4 way flashers. Turning the key to just before starting probably sends voltage to the glow plugs. If you didn't get and operators manual and or service manual maybe you should buy one. I see that the parts manuals are a free down load. Any pics of the switch? does it have any symbols and does it light up?

The black switch above the igntion turns on hazards and turn signals. The ignition does have a position just before start to activate the "thermostart device". Some FT tractors have it some don't.
Plugging in a 120V block heater is better than relying on combustion chamber glow plugs or intake manifold heaters . To crutch a cold engine into a knocking, rattling smoke spewing start.
