I have a JD 4400 with 220 hours, I noticed what I thought was excessive smoke coming out of one of two hoses from the engine. Any suggestions, there is no oil consumption and the engine is not heating up?

Any suggestions on how to repair cracking plastic hood and side panels?
Thanks.

There are several ways to go about this depending on your aesthetic tolerance factor.
You can apply sheetrock tape with a glue gun to the inside and JB Weld the outside. Sand it and paint it. You can also use a plastics welder that after sanding will make it look like new. As far as the engine. You are no where near worn piston rings with only 220 hours on the motor. Does it go away when the engine comes to temperature? Some blow by will always be prevalent on a diesel but dissipates upon engine heats. The other thing can be a blown head gasket. You say the engine is not heating up and I assume you are reading the gauge. Check to see if there is water in the radiator to assure you have a working temp gauge. Lastly I had a friend with a modern JD diesel. He put agricultural fuel in it once and it smoked like all get out. Switched to pump diesel and smoking considerably lessened.

Check for a hydraulic leak, buy a plastic repair kit from harbor freight or northern freight...lot of the repair kit will color match too... They're sometimes called plastic welding kits...

Can't see how that can be since AG and Pump fuel are both ULSD.

I think it may have had something to do with the sulfur content. This was about 10-12 years ago.

I checked both the oil level and water, both were at full level. There was not any water in the oil, which leads me to believe its not a head gasket. The black smoke is coming from a hose and not out of the muffler, air filter is not clogged. Thanks for your input, I'm not sure what function the two rubber hoses perform. any thoughts are appreciated.

My 4300 had a thin rubber hose that was an overflow drain from the fuel filler. It shifted and melted a few years ago....

One should be a breather hose (where you have smoke) the other should be an overflow hose of some type. The breather hose is for venting the crankcase . Black smoke is unburnt fuel. This usually comes out of an exhaust. Because you have it coming from the overflow you can have a cracked valve guide or perhaps a bad fuel injector that is dumping excessive fuel in a particular cylinder. I doubt you have a ring or piston problem as the motor is like knew. I suppose a ring may have gotten stuck but the odds are against it. Is the tractor having any other signs such as loss of power or rough idling?
Try some injector cleaner. If you go down to your local JD dealer to pick up the cleaner, perhaps you can pick someone's brain down there as well. Yours cannot be the only problem like this on a 4400. DFKrug rebuilt a 4300 once. You may want to pm him to see what he ran into.

Only a compression test and/or a leak-down test on each of the cylinders compared to factory specifications can tell if you have excessive blow-by.

Thanks, I will try the fuel injector cleaner. Really appreciate, will let you know if the cleaner solves the problem, also will check to see if there is water in the fuel bowl.
