Could some other with CK20's do a comparison for me? For the first time yesterday I noticed exhaust coming from what I guess is the crankcase vent when I hopped off the tractor for a minute with it running. I guess I had never had the tractor backlit by sunlight like that to be able to see it, but here is what to compare for me.

The vent comes off the top of the engine at a round knob type of thing, then turns into a metal pipe and finally into a clear plastic tube that goes down the side of the engine on the right side as you are sitting in the drivers seat. If you look on that side the pipe just stops right beside the bottom of the engine like an overflow pipe or something.

I can seal my finger over the hole in the pipe for about 5 seconds and it builds up enough pressure to start hissing at the seal of my finger. It definitely is blowing some exhaust out that pipe when running.

Can anyone compare this for me? I'm wondering if this is blowby that I need to take it back to the dealer for, or if it is normal for these engines... and just because I havn't noticed it before now doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been doing it since new.

a little blowby is natural (slighty see it) but if it's puffing a good stream of blue-white smoke,,, it's engine repair time..

ps,,, if u ever see oil coming out of that tube,,, it's the hydraulic pump,, it's pumping hydro fluid into the crack case..

remedy: change the pump (a new 1) most of the time the shaft is worn and they don't sell that part separately..

change oil and filter..

top up transmission with hydro fluid..

that's about it for the blowby tube,, hope it helps...

I wish I had some way to quantify the amount that I see so that I knew if it was an abnormal amount or not. Best way I can describe it, is it is approximately the same amount of exhaust you would see from a pinhole leak in an exhaust pipe. Maybe a third of the amount of smoke of a burning piece of incense. I started it up today and it doesn't seem to do it when running cold.. it was good and hot yesterday when i saw it.

Anyone??? I don't want to bring this back to the dealer if it is something normal that all of the CK20's are seeing. Anyone else with one of these noticed it?

Robert, as some amount of blowby may be considered normal, why not ask the moderators to move this out of the Kioti forum and into the general owning/operating forum? Or possibly reposting a similar question there asking about blowby. I know we have some serious diesel guys on TBN, they may not be frequenting the Kioti forum.

Not completely ture. Oil coming out the tube can also be a sign of worn rings, or a head gasket that is not sealing or blown.

An overfull crankcase would be a sign of a bad hyd pump seal. But if ones crankcase is at the proper level and getting oil out the tube i would lean towards worn rings or cylinder wall.

I'm not getting any oil out of the tube at all. Just exhaust smoke when it is thoroughly warm and the amount of oil showing on the dipstick hasn't changed any since I did the 50 hour service (now at about 120 hours). Nothing seems wrong with the engine, I am just inquiring about the smoke to see if it is normal or if I need to take it back for warranty work if it isn't.

Robert, I "think" it's just the normal amount, but to be sure, I'm going out to check it out for you on mine. I'll post back later to let you know what I find. Since I can't really see how much yours is smoking, I can only guess that it's the normal amount I've seen on other tractors, but since I had gas engines years ago, not diesel, I'll hold off to see.

Using a high quality fully synthetic oil with a low Noack volatility rating will reduce the crankcase oil loss considerably since there is so much less lost due to volatility at normal operational temperatures.

Check and see how much oil you are consuming. Our Kubotas don't use any measurable oil consumption (ie -> Zero) during 100 hours of operation on Amsoil 10W-40.

Robert, I went out and started the tractor, let it get to operating temp, then took my moveable utility light and shined it into the blowby tube so that I see how much "smoke" I was getting. I'm getting probably same amount of light smoke that you're getting, and also the pressure build up that you mentioned.
Since I never have any oil loss, and there is not extensive smoking or discharge from the tube, I'd say you're getting the right amount of blowby that you'd find on most engines.
If you don't have to add oil over a long period, as I don't, and your smoke is not a heavy black color, and thick, I'd say there's no problem.
