Blown head gasket

My brother brought over his Case 222 for me to fix. I knew immediately that it had a blown head gasket. Upon removing the had this is what I found. I have no idea how long he ran it with the blown gasket but it did do a nice jobonthe head. I noticed all the head studs were a little loose ikn the block but the nuts were tight. Would loose studs cause this much damage or is there something else I should look for? It is a 12HP Kohler.

Looks to me that the gasket bos is eroded away. How is the head in that area? You may need to have the cylinder and head milled if there is enough meat on the bone. Maybe fill in the erosion by welding and than mill. This is not going to be a DIY job. Dont even think about DIY, you need a pro shop.

A few years back an acquaintance had the same thing happen to a single cylinder Kohler engine of his. As I recall, the problem in his case was traced down to a too lean fuel mixture, caused by extreme wear in the carburetor throttle shaft and bushing.

The block is O.K. It is cast iron. The head is aluminum and is shot. I replaced the head and got it running but it is missing and backfiring. I have to check the carb settings and the timing.
