We bought our first DVD player this past week and 6 movies. 2 of the movies were great but the other 4 played the first 30 seconds over and over, again and again. Am I having player problems or bad luck with the DVD's?

Sony Blue-ray DVD player.

5 of the discs were blue-ray and 1 was a regular dvd that was given to us last year.

My guess would be a bad player. Something to consider:

BluRay is an evolving standard, I think there's another release of the standard coming out in the near future that enables some online content. I really hope that the older players will be able to play a newer disc but just not get the new content, but I wouldn't place any money on what Sony does with the standard. If I were to buy a BluRay player today, I'd fork out the extra for a Sony PlayStation 3. It's expensive and has a proprietary RF remote (yes, it's actually Bluetooth but if they're the ONLY Bluetooth device out there that still means proprietary in my book!) instead of having a more reasonable IR receiver so using a universal remote is out without some special adapters. But it's also one of the few players that is both hardware ready for an Internet connection (which it currently uses for games) and has been firmware upgradeable through the BluRay standards so far (past performance is not an indication of future features, of course).

Of course, the alternative is the Microsoft route, forget about the moderate increase in BluRay quality as well as buying individual DVDs and go for a NetFlix account for ~$10/month and have their entire library streamed directly to an XBox 360. This is great for people with broadband Internet, not such a reasonable idea for people on dialup.

Find some one who has a PS3 and see if they play on there that would confirm if the disc or good or bad. My PS3 plays Blu ray just fine But they are just too expensive in my mind.

I took everything we have back to the store this morning and found out we were pushing the wrong button on the remote. They said some movies have a menu at the beginning of the movie and we have to push the round button in the middle of the remote to get it to play. The kid just smiled at me and said thanks for shopping Best Buy.

That sounds like a problem I've had myself with our DVD player, and I don't even have Blu-ray or Green Ray or any other kind of Ray.:D

Hey bigtiller, don't feel too bad. That kind of thing goes on around our house more than I can keep track of. I even text message my sons when they are out of town, to ask them "how to get the sound back." They tolerate me well, I must say.

It takes all of my mental stamina to keep up with the "advances". I just got a Google G-Phone. It is truly an astonishing device. But right now, "early adoptors" like me have some problems -- like email not being fully functional.

I asked Ibrahim & Muhammad about this; they just shrug and say "somebody'll write an app that fixes it." "When?" I ask. "Soon," they say.

I used to be the one to tell them to "just be patient."

Hakim
