I have a 12 deep porch and had vinyl siding on the back of house that the porch covers. When I took the vinyl siding off I have 7/16 osb board. I知 using 10 wide by 3/4 thick cypress. Will the 7/16 hold the boards if I glue them then screw them to the osb board or should I add another sheet of 7/16 or 5/8 plywood to the existing osb board that is on my house. If the screws will work what type and size would you use

I have done both horizontal cedar siding and board and batten over 7/16 OSB without any issues. We live in a wind zone (sometimes 60-70mph gusts) and have not experienced problems. I have used both ring shank nails (in a pneumatic nailer) and 1 3/4" to 2" screws. The nail gun is faster, but I like the holding power and the "removability" of screws.

Hope your project goes well!

I wouldn’t just us the OSB. The board and batten doesn’t need horizontal backing and nailing all that often. I’d add some horizontal 1x every 2-3’ for the nails or screws. If this makes things too thick you can rip the OSB the width of the 1x- the 1x will only be 1/2” or so above the OSB in that scenario.

Glueing siding isn’t something I’d encourage. The shrink/swell cycles with either bust the glue or split your nice new board and batten.

Over here in NewZealand I have never heard of gluing board and batten. what I were taught is it is important to only fix (screw or nail) down the centre line of the board. Let the batons hold down the outside of the board this reduces the splitting that would otherwise occur if there were two fixing across the board. The boards are always going to swell and shrink as the seasons change if it is fixed in more than one place it stresses the timber which will eventually lead to cracking

I see several different styles, so it might depend on what you choose. I would use some housewrap over the OSB, locate the studs under the OSB and run screws through the new siding and OSB into the studs.

A few different installation methods.

I decided to tear off the osb and add blocks for nailers and reapply zip board. Thanks for the reply’s

Zip Siding is my very favorite and in my opinion, well worth the additional cost over OSB and house wrap.

My parents house was vertical board & batten. Boards were nailed right down the center. Battens were nailed to one side of the boards only. This allowed everything to shrink/swell with the seasons and nothing cracked. House was built in 1949 and still the exterior looks fine. The under layment was 1" x 8" diagonal pine ship lap.

I have finished the tear off and added the 2x4 horizontal nailers. My next question and I have read a lot of different options is how to nail it. These cypress boards are 3/4 by 11 and will be 8? long. I知 going use #8 galvanized spiral cut nails.

The current way I知 leaning is to nail 3.75 from the end go over another 3.75 place another nail. That gives two nails on board and then put one nail down the middle of the 2 batten.
