I am posting this here since some of you have experience with towing very large boats (DiamondPilot). Is this trailer worth it?

Heavy Duty Triple Axle Boat or Sail Transport Trailer Commercial Galvanized 36' | eBay

I need to move a 39ft 14ft beam boat about 30 miles. I dont want to get into permits, GVW, etc, I just want to know if you think this trailer will do it. The trailer is 36ft long and 8.5ft wide. The boat is an 79 aft cabin Marinette.

Thanks

For the price of the trailer, could you not have it moved three times by a specialized hauler?

That trailer is a POS and way overpriced in my opinion. It will need new tires to move your boat, probably new bearings and brakes, new bunks, new wiring, new lights, and the list goes on. It looks like 6 lug axles so that means a max of 6,000# per axle so 18,000# GVWR. I would guess the trailer is in the 2,500# to 3,000# range so you have about 15,000# of load capacity. What does your boat weight?????

I am sure that GVWR is not going to cut it for you to load your boat on. My 32' 10' Beam Wellcraft weights 12,000# without the trailer and my uncles 36' SeaRay with a 11' beam is 18,000#

If it were me I would just hire someone to move it for you. I would guess you could get it moved for $700 or so. We had a 60'x14' House boat brought up last summer 400 miles for under $3000.

Lastly, in 2009 I ordered a brand new 35' 18,000# trailer brand new for another SeaRay of my friends for right around $5000 brand new. It had upgraded Disc Brakes on all axles, seal lights, and aluminum wheels with spare.

Yea, I was leaning that way but figured it would hurt to ask. The boat weights 14k empty ( and it would be that way because of the weight). I am looking in to a trailer because I am trying to move it to my house, and getting a semi in to the yard would be tough, and it would be tight with a truck/trailer. Lastly, I have know id how they would unload it when they got it there, so I was just going to leave it on the trailer.

Thanks for the advice

The trailer at the marina is universal and has 4 hydraulic rams on each corner.

We would just load it up, take it to where it needs to sit, lift the trailer via the 4 rams getting the tires off the ground 6", block up the boat, drop the trailer back out and drive off. Can do one in a hour.

You could probably move it with that and get away with it if you were really determined, but why?

Diamondpilot hit the right issues. Plus it looks like it's designed for a boat with much more rearward weight bias. And the time and effort involved to get the bunks right for moving and long term storage will be considerable.

Don't downplay the permit and legal issues. It's 14 ft wide, it's heavy and needs good brakes, and you'll be completely responsible if you drop it. A boat hauler will be completely insured.

Even if you have to have a crane to lift it off and set it on timbers and stands in your yard, you might still be ahead. And the boat might be happier blocked that way if it will be stored for a while or worked on.

I hired a 60 ton crane to swing a 42' Ketch over a roof, from a back yard in a neighborhood and set it on a big rig yacht trailer. Then lift and set the cradle onto another trailer. Then break down the crane, drive it to the marina, set it up again and lift the cradle into position and then lift the Ketch off the trailer and set it on the cradle. Later, a local boat yard drove their travel lift to the yard, picked up the boat and drove it back to their yard to set it in the water. Sheesh. And it was so worth it.

Don't sugarcoat it, tell us what you really think.:laughing:

Yea, if you look at the EBAY add they have had over 39 offers of which the seller would not take. My guess is it would take $1500 to make it road worthy to my standards. I can get a new one for around $5000 and this guy is asking $3500, give me a break. I would not pay over $1000 for that trailer.

Either get a permit or hire someone to haul it. Just the oversize ticket, not to mention the overweight ticket, is going to cost more than it would to hire it done. Anything over 12ft wide will hit you really hard in the penalty dept if you get stopped.

The trailer is very far from being a "POS"!!!
The galvanizing looks solid.
Tires and rims look to be good condition.
Can't tell about brakes and lines but probably shot.
Springs-???
Tire condition and wheel bearings would be my major concern.
It appears to be designed to haul different types of boats rather than to fit one only.
The new cost of that trailer was probably in the $10 grand range, maybe more.
Owner is offering to let inspect.
Should have a Dually to pull it.
On the other hand you might want to rethink your plan to move a boat that size to your yard in Jacksonville! I ESCAPED Jax in 1998 after the city wanted to fine me over $20,000. for parking my motorhome too close to the sidewalk at my home.(long story, short) I owned the MH long before the sidewalk went in.
I bought two acres in St Johns Co. and waived good bye with my middle finger!
