Here in NE Texas, NOTHING beats a good bois d' arc post for longevity. I built some fence a couple of years ago with some good straight posts. I bought some more recently and stacked them in my barn for later use. They have been in there for a few months. I was looking at them the other day and it seems they have more splits in them than the posts I used last time. Do you think the time of year a post is cut can affect how mush it splits when it dries completely?

No, or if it did it would only be a minor difference. Black Locust is also very rot resistant. That stuff just does not rot out.
