deisel engine, starts sometimes, then stops, no speed control, yet control works. we have clean fuel and cleaned fuel filter bowl and filter. this is a 4 wheel drive farm tractor from the 1970's. at first we couldn't get it started at all, now just won't stay running, fuel injector problem? fuel injector pump govenor gone> anyone heard of this before? we are looking to find a place to take it to fix it or have someone come down. we are south of boston, mass.

What do you mean when you say "no speed control, yet control works..."? A few more specifics about what happens will be helpful, too. Once you get it started, can you rev the motor up or down? When it dies, has it run for a few minutes, then slowly dies, or does it suddenly quit all at once? Is it better, worse, or no difference under load?

motor cannot be reved up or down, when dies, quits all at once. worse under load. as for speed control, will run as long as you keep it in one spot, not stepping or releasing gas, just holding the peddle half way

Is this a sudden problem? I'd start by changing the fuel filter & check the air filter. If that doesn't help, post the results.

My 1960 Massey Ferguson 35 will do that if I leave it outside through a few rainstorms. The air cleaner fills up with water and produces bizarre behaviour from the Perkins diesel engine.

How does yours run with the air cleaner removed?
