I'm wanting to make some snow chains on the cheap. I was thinking about bolting a chain to the backside of my rim, then wrapping it around the tire to the front side and bolting that end there. If I could get 4 chains per tire, would it work? Is bolting it to the rim going to tear up the rim?

If it worked everybody would do it. How much does lost production and getting towed ? A set of good chains is not expensive.

A set of good chains is not expensive.

A "GOOD" set of chains for my little 9.5x24 tires runs over $300 set. For his Mahindra A "good" set is well over $500. A decent set of chains is more like $400 and a set of the cheapest ladder chains still sets him back an easy $250. To me, chains can be pricey.

As far as bolting to the rim, I don't see why that wouldn't "work".... 4 chains is not much help though. You will hardly ever have chain contact, especially for braking. I would think 10-12 as a minimum.

I suggest you look at Tire Chains by TireChains.com and find what the actual costs would be. 4-link ladder type chains cost $142.55 plus shipping.
SW Missouri (jones2127's region) is not a snow belt area, although I'm sure they get some snow there.
What jones2127 has to determine is what type of chains he needs. I have 4-link ladder chains for my Deere 4400 (turf tires, size 41X14X20) that worked quite well in south central Pennsylvania on a relatively flat drive.

If you do decide to order chains, ask about how much side and top clearance is required and ensure the chains will fit (I had to reverse my rims for clearance). Also, order early...once winter hits, the more popular sizes sell out pretty quickly (I found that out the hard way).

BuickandDeere...where did you see ladder type chains for $1000? And, what size tire?

Brilliant, thank you all for helping me look at it from every angle. I'll be using the tire chain website to place an order.

Double spaced ladder to fit 16.9x30

OK...4-link ladder chains (on www.tirechains.com) cost $294.65.
2-link ladder types aren't available, but 4-link ladder chains could be modified fairly easily for about $100-$125, including the price of the tool required...

If you had a welder and lots of time, you could make a set from some used chains. I ran across an old set of duallies for $20 and cut and welded links until they fit. Took a while, but shop time is good and I'm cheap...er...frugal...:)
