OK. I love to search this site and a bunch of great info is going to get buried in a different thread and I will never find it.

Ponytug... One of the mods from the group is to take out the spare bolts on the mower stump jumper, and add a drilled out piece of tire or horsemat to prevent the blades from jamming under the mower. I did not have this problem with flat blades but these custom blades I made jam in a huge way...

Still wondering what kind of bearings I am facing when I take my mower apart...

Carl, You probably will not know what bearings are installed until you take the spindle apart. You might be able to give the model and serial number to Keith at PT, and he can maybe tell you something. It might be a good idea in your spare time to take one of the spindles apart in order to read the bearings numbers, in case some of the bearings burn up. This is probably a good idea, so you can see how everything comes apart, and the condition of the spindle assembly. You can still take one of the other spindles apart, and retrieve the bearings numbers. This is assuming that you have the three spindle brush cutter. PT maybe has the original bearings, or some replacement bearings. As a last resort, if the spindle is not reamed out, you can measure the diameter for the outside of the bearing, and measure the spindle for the inner dimension, and then order the bearing of your choice, sealed or unsealed or half sealed.

JJ,
I was told the # on the bearing is 'not' a part # but a 'patent' #.

Also, my deck had both of the outside spindles and bearings were the same dimensions...but, the middle is not the same dimension as the outside two, it is bigger with a key and keyway on the spindle. And there are real thin washers that go over the bearings of the middle spindle.

This is what I found.

Q. What do the numbers on bearings mean?
A. Bearings are manufactured to international standards established decades ago. These standards define the metals used, the tolerances, and the basic boundary dimensions. They also allow for a worldwide numbering system which makes our job easier. If a customer wants a 6210-2RS or a 23972MBC3W33, we'll know exactly what it is.

JJ,
I am not quite sure I understand.

So, are you saying the # on the bearing is actually the way to tell the size and metal type?

Yes, the manufacture name or initial is stamped on the bearing, and their part number. Each manufacture has their unique part number, and somewhere they have a cross reference. That number represents the type bearing, the size, the seals if any, and type seal, such as rubber or steel. Very people can just pick up a bearing and tell you its characteristic. If you need to replace a bearing that is destroyed, the bearing guy can sell you a bearing by measurement. You can sometimes improve your equipment by installing better bearings for the work you are doing. If you will search the INTERNET for [ bearings numbers ] you will come up with lots of informative data. If you have a Baileys hydraulics catalog, it will give you some data about bearings.

Thanks JJ.

That is good info to know.

Here's an excellent resource for finding/ordering bearings on-line. They have extensive cross-references.

However, like PT, I think they have a minimum order (though I think it's smaller). I've ordered from them once, and it was problem-free:

Bearingplace.com | Timken bearings FAG bearings Torrington bearings Fafnir bearings Cooper Bearings INA bearings Rollway Bearings Sealmaster bearings Browning bearings NSK bearings RBC bearings BCA bearings Bower bearings kaydon bearings link belt bearings MRC bearings NTN bearings McGill bearings consolidated bearings IKO bearings Barden bearings NR bearings

You have to register to be able to search their database, but it's free...
