BOON! \'yotes ...

Boon ... just curious ... we've recently moved into 6.5 acres in orange county ny.

The sellers had mentioned coyotes. Some further research reveals that these 'yotes were introduced into Harriman State Park to control deer populations.

Well, the deer and their masses have left the park and taken the 'yotes with em, right into the rural and suburban neighborhoods.

Further research shows that these 'yotes (eastern) are hybrids comprised of the western species and the american gray wolf.

They pack up alright, and frequently raise the hairs on the back of my neck. I know they will take small mammals, including small domestic cats and dogs.

We've got 2 horses who spend a lotta time out of the barn. They are a lot less nervous than we are when the 'yotes get near (real near, very bold they're getting).

Interested to hear about yote packs from your experiences.
Thanks.

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

Do a search for coyotes and you will see some of the previous posts.

Coyotes consider cats as snacks. Being that the NY variety wants to pack, I could see some problems for sickly or stranded animals. Now I bet they're protected in NY state, aren't they?

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

Terry, There is a season for coyotes, and we hunt them all winter long. It is a real challenge to get them to come in close enough for a shot. Here a few photos to show what they can do, and what happens on the flip side!

Von,

My comment about about sickly or standed animals was meant to describe domesticated, not wild. We need varmits to clean up those that die or are sickly. But, when they go after domesticated. It's open season.

I guess my sarcasm was lost in the meaning (NY state might protect them since they were brought in... yada, yada, yada)

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

We have coyotes on our 160 acres and they sure don't control the deer. They get together for community singalongs but I don't know that they hunt deer in packs. They can get a sickly calf and maybe one at birth but usually losses are rare to them. A nearby town (a mile) has a rep as a dump ground for dogs and the surounding area has a lot of stray dogs which pack up and harrass/kill cattle much worse than the coyotes. I'm still not sure if I want to thin out the coyotes on my land as I do respect their position in the natural order of things but would like to see the bob white quail make a come back in numbers to support hunting. If the coyotes would kill my beaver menace I'd be much more tolerant when weighing their fate. Playing god is much more complicated than I had ever imagined.

Have you tried the varmit calling tapes, recordings of stressed rabits? That and a 222, 22-250, or even a 223 will take one out to 300 yds but I have friends who have had them practically walk over them to get to the speaker when playing the tape. (Forgot to sit back to back and keep watch in all directions.)

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

Yes, I believe they are protected with no take at all. I know they're feeding on hare, turkey, groundhog, racoon, possom and small deer.

They're 'wiley' and I would guess they might take larger livestock if it was ill or tied up-confined.

I see them rarely (only 2x since last March) and when I do, it's usually as roadkill.

I appreciate they're position in the chain, but just trying to find out what the parameters are for living with them.

Thanks.

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

You can trap coyote's in NY if you have a trapping license, I believe the season is open on them now. I do not know for sure if you can hunt them with a gun but I really don't have many coyotes around here to have to worry about it.

Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

You don't have to worry about a "thinning" effect if you hunt coyotes. Part of their survival abilities help them sense if their local population is being effected by disease/starvation/other to the point where there litter size will increase to sustain or increase their total numbers. As anyone who understands and has lived amongst the coyote knows - those who have coyotes will always have coyotes - those who don't have coyotes will eventually be getting them. We used to have a lot of red fox in our area and no coyotes - now the coyotes have moved in and pushed out the fox - they do not co-exist. Hunt them if you have an interest in doing so - your not going to accomplish that which has never been accomplished ever despite efforts - reducing their numbers.
