Re: BOON! \'yotes ...

Well yes and no, sort of... If I start shootingl coyotes I will surely not effect the coyote as a species or even make a noticable change in state or county populations BUT hunting in a limited area does have an effect, not entirely unlike that of putting your fist in a pail of water and temporarily displacing some fluid which returns as soon as the "hand of man" is removed. In short, in a limited area, shooting coyotes can reduce the population of the immediate area. I am aware of their adaptability, they coexist with people in Beverly Hills and in the areas of San Diego with canyons, which is much of it. I actually like coyotes, love to hear their "concerts" and don't feel they threaten cattle on the place but I've got too many critters that eat ground nesting bird eggs and young. While I do have Bob White quail, their numbers are way below what they used to be and surely there are way too few to consider hunting them.
I have built my mom a compost area 8x8 with railroad ties as a retaining barrier. So far nearly everything that we bury gets dug up by racoons and or feral cats/bird killers. I suggested that we just put the stuff on the surface and then bury what they don't eat and save everyone (them and us) the wasted digging. I have seen fox tracks and had a brown (buff colored) one within 10-15 ft of me but was looking the wrong way so only my wife saw it. It left tracks under the house before the stem wall was finished. The fox gets close to the house but the coyotes tend to stay a couple hundred feet out or further, mostly further. So far the fox and coyotes are coexisting with each other (or are unaware of wach other) the beaver, racoons, o'possum, and armadillo.
I'm starting my fourth year of wait and see regarding the wildlife population and may not do anything other than trying to reduce/elliminate my personal beaver population which hasn't gone well so far. I have trapped one beaver and have traps set near active slides but no joy so far after a couple weeks. A trapper I'm not!
