Tractor
1965 Massey 135
Well I know very little of tractors but I just bought 38 acres of land of which 34 are in dire need of mowing. My plan is to buy a larger older tractor for mowing and then a new subcompact with FEL for work in barns and what not down the road. I had trouble finding an older unit for under 5k. This popped up on craigslist so I went, looked and made a bit of an impulse buy. The guy selling said it was a 1967 but I looked up the serial number that was located on the tag on the engine SGM641005290 and it looks to me to be a 1965 with 5700 hours. I paid $3250 for the tractor and MF rotary cutter. I am going to start a thread in MF O/O forum and ask many questions there about restoration and servicing this tractor.

Nice looking old tractor. I bought a 1964 MF135 diesel deluxe with multipower in July 06 for $3600 with 4600 hours showing on the meter. Looks like you have the deluxe model (which has the complete set of gauges--the special model has only two gauges).

Get the operator, service and parts manuals. Check the AGCO website (they own MF nowadays).

It appears to be a 1965 like mine. If it's mechanically sound. In other words. It everything works, and doesn't leak or smoke, then you did ok. It looks like someone (kids) did a bit of graffiti on the dashboard. Check all your fluids. If your knowledge of MF's is limited, then take it to a shop and have them comb it over. I see a new parts all over it, so someone has been working on it. It there is no rust, the old girl has potential to be a star again. Save all of those emblems if your planning on a refurbish or restore. Good luck and let us know how she checks out. - Robert

It looks like you have a good candidate for a restoration, even though the previous owner seems to have went a little overboard with the red paint while failing to mask everything off. If you plan to replace the DIY front grille or any of the sheetmetal, I suggest trying to find original parts from a salvage yard because I've read that most (if not all) aftermarket sheetmetal parts are of poor quality which usually results in a poor fit.

When you begin restoring your tractor, feel free to refer to my Massey 135 restoration thread (link in my sig) and/or ask me questions as you go. :)

You have to love seeing these old 135s find a home where they'll get a little well-deserved and hard earned care and attention. Anyone who has done any work on them will tell you it's hard to go wrong, invest a little time and money and you'll end up with something that will last another 50 years.

Look forward to helping any way we can, congrats!
