I ended up buying the McCormick GX50 with FEL and Cab after looking at a number of options. One very important factor is the dealer and they are really really good.
We actually have a lot of land but I lease it to my neighbor who raises cattle and he hays 54 acres of it. My needs are a lot like everyone else here, a good general purpose tractor. I looked at compacts and standard utilities. I decided that to move around the barn and manage the blueberry orchard that we are planning, a compact would be a better choice. I still wanted a 40-50hp tractor though because I will be plowing and at some point I will be doing some square baling. If and when I need to take over the big fields I will add a full size tractor.
A cab was very important to me because when I have time to work at the farm ( I don’t live there) then that is my time no matter what the weather. There will be times when I have to work in the freezing cold or rain. Plus, when plowing, shelter from the dust is nice.
4wd is essential. We have hills and a pond too. The blueberries will be partially planted on a hill. I also wanted a shuttle shift not HST.
I looked at the CNH DX/TC 40-55 tractors as well as JD 5205 and 4*20’s as well as MF 15** and 451-471’s. I also looked at Kioti and Kubota. The smaller tractors do not have cabs yet except for Kioti and ?Kubota. I didn’t want an aftermarket cab and to get into the Deere with cab I was looking at nearly $40K retail and it only has HST. The MF 1545 looked good but got pricey because of the required DynaQPS transmission with cab.
When I looked at the McCormick GX ( built by Landini as the Mistral America) I found a number of very good features. The tractor has a proven track record in Europe for years and has also been sold as the NH TCE. It has a front locking differential as well. It is powered by a VERY smooth Yanmar 4cyl that fires up and runs perfectly immediately ( something I have not found with others including the Kioti DK45). The power steering was very smooth ( yes, noticeably so). The fit/ finish/ built quality seem to be excellent. Better than the other tractors. I did like the 3pt set up on the Kioti better with adjustable links and the ability to raise and lower the 3pt from behind the tractor. Not huge, but nice.
The 12x12 shuttle is really nice, and the transmission is synchronized and works well. I have tested it going down the road and will attest that it works nicely. I bought the cab on faith having never seen it. I am not sorry, it is first rate. Solid and well built.
The size of the tractor is like the TC/DX 45, MF15**, etc. The CG is lower than most of them which is nice on the hills. The nicest thing was, with Cab/ AC/ Heat, FEL it was only $25K. Photos are in the AG tractors section under 100+hp section because I couldn’t find an “other “ category that made any sense.
I also have a Taylor 7ft hoe, 6ft box blade, 6ft rake, Post hole digger etc.
