After getting your-all's good feedback, I went back to the local Rural King and found out that the fellow who assembles them there had worked on my other tractor in the past. So, I got me an RK credit card and bought a 254 with the discount (I've paid off the credit card so as not to have the 22 percent interest!).

I put a little over half tank of fuel in it so I could get it off the trailer and drive it down to my place. THEN I read the manual (bad idea, I know!). I put highway grade diesel fuel in it. Now I see you're supposed to put off road diesel in the little dude. I called the mechanic who assured me that "one tank won't hurt the engine, you'll just have less horsepower -- don't do it again after you finish off that tank." But, I'm paranoid -- should I drain the tank now and refill with off road? Or is there an additive that can be mixed with the fuel in the tank to add the lubricating properties of off road diesel?

The little tractor runs very well so far, but I only put about an hour on it to this point. Kind of runs like a mid-60s JD my father in-law used to farm with. . . By now, I've gone through all the manuals -- the last edition must have been around 1970 . . .

The only difference is the color and the price.

1. The Fed's require a red dye be put in off-road diesel so it can be detected if it's used in an on-road vehicle.
2. On road diesel is taxed at a higher rate than off-road diesel.

I'll bet your mechanic got a chuckle out of your phone call /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't worry about it. Use it, be safe, and have fun.

Wannafish is correct. Matter of fact in some parts of the country you would have a tough time locating red dyed diesel. An interesting point, in years past the sulfer content was different in the different grades of diesel, now the only difference is the color, and taxation of on road vs. off road. If you were to remove all of the taxes from both diesels, and purchase the red dyed diesel, the red diesel for off road would be the higher priced of the two. This is due to the cost of the dye used to change the color to red. Best I can recall the last time I purchased red diesel the dye was somewhere around .02 a gallon surcharge.
On the flip side of the equation, should you find red diesel and drive a diesel truck. Don't try putting the dyed diesel in the fuel tank of the truck. While it won't hurt anything with in the engine. It is illegal, and the penalty far out weighs the savings of a few dollars in taxes.

You have not filled out your profile so I don't know what state you are in but in Texas you have to have a Fuel Tax Exemption Certificate to buy dyed diesel fuel and it is strictly to be used for off road equipment.

It is the same as regular diesel fuel, the dye is added so the DOT can catch anyone who is using it in an over the road vehicle.

If you can buy it you will save money and it won't hurt a thing.

Seemed like I read on one of the boards that the Off Road diesel was High sulfer and in many places is the same product used for home heating oil. That may be old info, I am sure EPA is taking the sulfer out of off road engines if they are persuing Tier II requirements. Anyway, to anser the posters concern, if you saw what comes in these tanks from China, you wouldn't worry much about what fuel you use here! We use dyed fuel for ours as a cost savings but many of our customers just buy highway fuel, and as has been said, in some places it is hard to get the dyed fuel.

Well, now you all can tell how many vehicles with diesel engines I've owned (0). I feel better now, so much so, I went out and spent five hours moving dirt! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks so much. BTW, thanks for reminding me to put something in my profile!
