Tractor
John Deere 2320
What size box blade will work on a John Deere 2320 (24HP). I think a 48" will be too small, the tractor is about 50" wide but I am not sure if 60" will be too much to pull when full of dirt. I will be using it to level my yard where it settled after the septic was installed and also to grade a gravel driveway.

I have a 60" LP for a Kubota B3030 which is a light tractor (1900 lbs) I would want my box as wide as the tires. I dont think you would have any problems with a 60" BB. You can always take a little less bite when needed. I dont have any problems with my setup and my manual recomends a 54" BB.

Welcome to TBN :D! I agree with Barnboy as to BB width and Owner's Manuals tend to be rather conservative. Choosing a BB size is dependent upon what materials you will be working- for moving sod/dirt alot depends on tractor traction. JD's are relatively heavy for their "footprint" your tires are an important consideration here. You also need to look at also is how much weight your 3PH can lift. JD's usually have good 3PH lift capacities. IMHO the heavier the BB the better. Jay :)

Blackhawk, I've got a Frontier BB1060 on my 2520, it is a great size for that tractor. So far I haven't gotten to the point where I run out of power with it, just traction. And that can be avoided by taking smaller bites. I couldn't imagine getting a smaller box blade for this size tractor, the 60" seems just about perfect. That's what I'd recomment for your 2320.

60"/5' comes pretty close to the 5'/HP "Rule of Thumb"
, and as other posters have suggested you can always take a smaller bite. Jay :)

Jay,
I am not familiar with the 5'/HP rule of thumb. I would like to thank everybody for their help.

Just to clarify what Jay meant...there is a unwritten rule for box-blades, tillers, and brush-hogs(rotary cutters) that says you need 5 horsepower per 1 foot of the implement width. So ideally you would need 25 HP for the 5' BB.

BUT this is not set in stone, and subject to lot's of interpretation...

Thanks for your interpretation :D.

"Rules" are meant to be "pushed". I would not worry about the "Rule" as it relates to your JD. You need a BB wider than your wheel width. I am sorry I even brought it up :(. Jay
