Box blade recomendation for 40hp

Hello all,

I just recently got a new LS 4041. the width from lug to lug of the rear tires is 72" I am looking for a box blade used if I can find one for driveway mantainence as well as leveling out a field 2 acres.

I came across a a woods HB 84 used for $600 in good condition but am concerned that this blade may be too heavy and long. Should I pull the trigger or keep searching for a 72" to just cover wheels?

Tough call. Woods recommends 40-80 horsepower to pull this 1,200 pound Box Blade.

What is your soil? Do you have Top Link & Tilt hydraulic remotes? I would not want to adjust the Top Link in and out by hand, myself.

Ideally, you will have three remotes: Top, Tilt and ripper adjustment.

One hundred fifty pounds of Box Blade weight per foot of width is very good.

Tough call.

I do not have a top tilt however ls comes with rear remotes so adding one should not be too tough if needed. The drive is 1.5" process gravel and the field is free draining topsoil. Not too much clay around here.

The next best price would be $850 ish for everything attachments 72". Only a few hundred bucks more for new but nowhere near as substantial of a tool?

I would be on that 84" like stink on a pig. You want a couple inches beyond the tires generally, and that's a great price on a quality brand. It should handle it fine, and even if for some reason it wont, I'd sell that blade for more like $900.

If the HB84 is in good shape I think the price is very good and would grab it. Get a top link from Fit Rite hydraulics and tilt if you have a second remote to use. If you have your tires loaded you can manage the boxblade as long as the ground is dry enough. I have a similar sized boxblade that I use with my 110tlb and 4520. If you can get your tractor weight to 5000 to 6000 lbs you should be okay. That is a good price, it takes some time and money to acquire good implements and I recommend picking them up when you get a good deal like this.

For most smoothing and flattening I use a landplane grader blade for lawn and field prep. Much easier to use for people with little experience than a box blade. I did use both a box blade and a landplane for my lawn largely because I had the box blade first. Here are some pics of the 8' landplane I built in 2009 to smooth up my lawn area. Also pics of the lawn after smoothing and planting the grass.

For that price, I would just buy it and try it out. If it seems like it is to big, you can always sell it and get your money back, might even make some. That is a great price for that implement. :thumbsup:

Ok you guys have got me sold I will try to make purchase this weekend. The hydraulic tilt I would imagine allows for fine adjustments on the fly. How hard do you think it would be to turn the top link by hand. I'm new to tractors and appreciate the help.
