The question is do I need one or should I just save my money and have a dozer do it when they are over doing some grading for my house? on my land we have several roads cut through the woods that beat you to death in any vehicle we also have several areas down near a creek with drainage problems where we have a pooling of water that creates a swampy area and I would love to be able to correct the slope.

Is this the right tool for the job or should I go a different route?

Box blade will do great. Run it down the road a couple times with the rippers down and then a few trips with the rippers up and you are good to go. A box blade is a very hady tool. I have never known anyone who regretted buying one. Don't go too cheap though, BB needs to be sturdy and heavey to work well. It is a good topic to do a search on. Lots of good info out there on the subject.

What size tractor have you? I think everyone who owns a tractor usually gets a Box scrape as one of their most versatile tools, as far as moving dirt it will pull dirt anywhere you want it, Although if you have an area say that you want to grab dirt from but you don't want to drag it over your driveway or lawn, then there is another tool called a ( Dirt scoop ) it also works from the tractors 3 pnt lift, it is built so that you can "scoop" soil lift it and drop it where you need to, The thing is it only hold about the amount of a wheel barrow would,;)

although I've known few folks who bought these used them 1 or 2 times and never used them again, resulting in selling them cheap, if were me I'd get a Box scrape, and keep an eye out for a good used dirt scoop,

A box blade is a "must have" if you have a tractor. It is one of the simplest and most durable implements and fairly cheap compared to other implements. It has many uses, especially maintaining trails and roads. It is a great way to move dirt!

X2. I use my dirt scoop in conjunction with the FEL and you can pull and pile a lot of dirt in a 30" dirt scoop. Both together for hauling a distance works great. If you get the scoop full, it sure seems like a lot more than a wheelbarrow full. If you just want to drag dirt from here to there, then a box blade.

Agree on the boxblade, I find new uses for King Kutter all the time. It takes practice to get really good, I still need more practice.
Its the multi-tool of attachments.
You will not regret the purchase.

If you can swing it, one of these blades would be GREAT for your roads. They work for a lot of other stuff also, but you can't beat them for road work.

The only thing about maintaining a road with a box scraper, is that there needs to be some material on the road for the scraper to use to fill, the low spots, and knock down the high spots. If you have anything like bigger rocks, you should have them popped out, and material brought in for a base. Once you have some material to work with, you can do a real nice job with a Box scraper. You can make ditches, and put a crown on the road. get a hydraulic side link, and you can quadruple your productivity.
