Tractor
Massey-Ferguson 1220
Hey guys, I love this site. I just got my "new to me" Massey Ferguson 1220 delivered yesterday. Took the boy (3 years old) out for a ride this morning. He loved playing with the FEL controls!

Anyway, I need to get a box scraper for this, and was wondering if there is a maximum size/weight of box I can get for this tractor. It is a 20HP Engine (17HP PTO) weighing in at 1874, without the FEL.

Also, I've heard mention of hydraulic top links and hydraulic tilt links. Anyone know of a good maker of these for small compacts, or has anyone ever built their own hydraulic links and control unit for this application?

Thanks everyone!
Matt

Hello, and welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think if you read through Hydraulic Top Link Questions thread, you'll get most of your questions answered. You can also do additional searhes using the Search function at the top of the page.

Oh, how about posting some pictures of the "new to you" 1220. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Most of us suggest you get a box blade wide enough to cover your rear tire tracks. With 20 Hp, this may be a little large, unless your rear wheels are only 48" wide, but that depends on the soil types you will be working with. You can always take a smaller bite if the box fills up so much you can't move it with your tractor. If you are ripping, you could drop just 2 or 3 of the tines if it won't pull with all of them engaging the ground.

I second the motion on photos /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif - congratulations on the "new" tractor and welcome to TBN!

I agree that 48" is the one you need. Otherwise you may have too hard a time with a full bucket, or serious ripping.
I don't have a hydraulic top link yet, but it's a great addition. John

Not to be a "Grinch" at Christmas time but I sure hope the tractor wasn't in motion when your 3 year old was out for a ride. Please don't take this the wrong way. I just would not ever want to read about a young boy being killed while riding on a tractor with his dad. Accidents happen so quickly and the results can last forever.

Ugh.

While tragic when things like that happen, you have to live your life. That is one of the best bonding moments there is and fathers have been doing that with their children since the invention of tractors.

Too many people live their lives in fear of everything.

Oh and I disable seat sensors on my lawn mowers /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

Matt, you'll like your MF tractor. I have a MF 1240 model (28 hp gross) and really like the way its built, size, and power. As for the box blade, you can do a lot with out a hydraulic top link. I've had 'em both, and for serious grading the hyd. top link is nice, but sure not necessary. My current machine does not have it and its fine. If it were me I'd look for a used box blade about the width of the rear wheels.

Personally I have no problem with having a child ride with me, slowly and responsibly of course. The experience will forever stay with him, but thats just me and I know not in line with todays super safe thinling.

Like I said I don't want to upset anyone. I think there is a difference between common sense and a "fear of everything." I gain or loose nothing regardless what people choose to do. Have a safe and happy holiday season... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Ya.. hehe <blush>

I had just come from a thread talking about a tractor with seat switch problems and was already slightly fired up over the fact that a tractor had a seat switch to begin with. It's not a lawnmower and sometimes tractors are used with powered implements with the user OFF of the machine. Thus my comment about seat switches on lawn mowers that was meant semi-humerously.

Don't like people making decisions about what I can and can't do with my stuff or artificially limiting something. If I screw it (or myself) up doing something stupid, then its all on me and was my decision.

All is good.. I'm just hypersensitive on safety subjects (and also fair use issues as they relate to electronics and computers all for the same root reason). I hope no one ever starts a thread OSHA. If anyone is within a few miles of me they'd see a pretty respectable mushroom cloud. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a JD 2210 with the smaller size box blade. Still 48" wide, but a .9 cu capacity and weighs less (280 or so lbs vs 450 or so lbs). This size box blade does not come as close to lift limits for the 3PH of your machine and still gives you the width. So far for me has been a good choice.
