Since I bought my YM1500 last year, it has always been a bear to get stopped, so I decided today to look into the brakes. Got one wheel and side shield off, then got the cover off w/brake shoes attached. The brake cam would not move, so evidently I was only using one side to brake, that being the other side. The adjustment cam was also locked solid. After removing the brake shoes (they have a LOT of material left on them), I soaked the cams down in penetrating fluid and started pounding on the lever that actuates the main cam. About 15 minutes later, it started to budge, and 30 minutes after that I can get it to move about 1" (using a 2 lb plastic hammer). It takes a LOT of force to move it, so I decided to get some lunch and let it soak some more.

My questions are: 1) Once I get the main cam to move a little easier, can I just press it out from the inside? Since I don't have a press, it will be more like "persuading" it out with a hammer and wood block.
2) Does the adjustment cam press out like the other, or does is screw out?

Looks like I'll be getting some seals from Hoyes, but I don't want to break anything in the process. Any suggestions on how to get these things out w/o destroying the mounting plate would be appreciated.

Well, guess I get to answer my own question :) Yes, both of the cams can be pressed out, but it took a LOT of penetrating spray, some carefull manual manipulation with a hammer and a lot of patience to get those cams loose. I also used a big wrench to help turn the adjustment cam to break it loose. I was able to rebuild both sides and get everything rotating freely. But I had to order new adjustment links/nuts/pins for both sides as the jackleg that worked on this before just bent threaded rod to each hole and secured it with a nut on each end. No adjustment whatsoever. Looking forward to getting the package from Hoye to get my brakes back in top shape.

Welcome aboard. :welcome: I started to comment on your thread but didn't really have anything to help you. :confused3: Glad you got things going your way. I'm sure your experience here will help others in the future.

Thanks Winston! I probably should have posted this in the main area under repairs, but I'm still working on where the best place is to put particular issues. I was thinking about taking pictures of my little job, but realized I'd probably goof up the camera w/grease as brake jobs seem to be a bit on the messy side.

No u posted in the right place. We try to post everything pertaining to our yanmars the forum here so that we and others can find it. Even I'd its a repair something to do with an attachment, your fuel or oil pit it here. Those guys in the repairs section may or can help but the Myanmar experts are here. Personally I never go to that section. So I would never see anything u posted to try and help. I am no expert bit have a bit of experience. Pics are best and I try ans take them and do write ups when I can to help others and I like seeing them on this ha I have not done. I need to go onto my brakes one day as one squeaks more than the other I just haven't done it yet.

Dave, I had to do the same on my YM240 when I bought it. That fundamentally unworn tractor had a long list of 'deferred maintenance' (neglect) issues. I did the same as you, penetrating oil, cleaning what I could, and a wood block to prevent damage to the brake shaft as I pounded it out. The good news was that cleaning and a light film of grease on the shaft was all the repair it needed. The shoes had plenty of lining and no oil had gotten in there to contaminate them.

If your prior owner put up with no brakes on one side he probably neglected other stuff too. Probably the most important issue on a neglected tractor is to clean the hydraulic filter and replace the fluid.

I got the obvious maintenance stuff worked through on my first Yanmar after a while. The good news is now nine years of reliable service after that initial extensive tinkering.

This forum is the right place to inquire about any Yanmar issue. Many of us have BTDT and can describe what's needed. Advice received here got me off to a good start, and I enjoy passing along what I learned.
