I started hearing metal grinding sounds at low speeds while braking and noticed one of the drums was running hot to the touch. I had the wheels off to get the valve stems that were cracking replaced and decided to pull the hot drum. I found blue spots inside the drum and what looks like blue metal deposited on the front brake shoe. What would be causing this? I ran the brake shoes loose on this position Imediately after I heard the first grinding sound. I first heard the sound about 4 months after I got the trailer, then pulled all the drums and found the grease seals leaking and replaced them. The grinding sound still persists.

Thanks - Mike

One of three things it could be.

1st is a bad drum

2nd is a bad shoe

3rd is a piece of debris got into the brake and caused the issue.

Now that I think about it, when I first got the trailer, I pulled the drums to check the packing job and found an extra backing plate nut riding in the bottom of this drum . It rode in there for the first 1000 or so miles. I'll try taking a grinder and knocking off the metal in the shoe. Thanks Chris.

Mike, I would just get new shoes. They run about $25 per set at the trailer place or you can go to the auto parts store and match them up. All trailer stuff is old Ford. Like from the 60's and 70's when they had drum brakes on the rear. I have used Napa and Auto Zone shoes for years on 3.5K and 5.2K axles. Not sure of the part # for a 7K but a trip to a good parts guy will have you fixed up. Just take the old ones. Should save you a few bucks.

i used a file to resurface "baked" brake pads of a sticky brake. Just skim the fine surface off so they are a little rough: brake twice and they'll be good to go again.
