Is it ok to use the left or right brake to help steer in 4wd? Thanks for all the input you guys are great.:D

it'll wear out your brakes pretty fast if you do it all the time.

The 2wd guys use it all the time in the pasture ( when needed).. but with 4wd.. you should not need it.

Why shouldn't you need it with 4 wheel drive? I don't use it in 4 wheel just because I don't like doing that to my gears if I can help it but no tractor I have ever seen will pivot on one tire without using the brakes. That's the whole point in having two brake pedals I always thought. You get to the end of your row, lift whatever is on the back and mash one brake to pivot it around into your next row.

Sometimes it helps on these limited slip or open diff rear ends too to get a wheel to stop spinning and keep going in a straight line.

i suppose that depends on why your useing brake stearing.

if its to pivot on a tire for an extra sharp turn 4x4 or not, it wont matter.

but if your front ribbed (or nearly bald front 4x2 tires) are not gripping and you NEED to make a turn, your best bet is to stomp a rear break to inniate the turn.

often times 4x4 (if ingaged) will pull the front end in the direction you are turning thus not needing extra rear brakeing help.

Only times ive used it is ive got the fronts off the ground and want to make a slight course correction, but with a hydro its a bit more difficult (at least going left)

(i still mean to move the cruse control disable to the clutch peddle were it belongs)

It doesn't hurt anything. Use it as needed.

My thinking is the same as schmism's.

The 4wd front almost always leads the rears, and generally drags the front around in a turn. If it is a panick turn.. yeah.. brakes do the job..

I use differential braking quite often in 4wd and 2wd. It's an aid in either one, especially when backdragging with the FEL, and the front tires pop off the ground. How else are you gonna steer when your front wheels aren't touching the gound or just barely touching it?

Also, I grew up on a tractor without a differential lock. I use differential braking as a "poor man's" differential lock when one rear wheel starts to spin. It's very effective to touch the brake on the spinning wheel to induce drag and make the other wheel turn also.

So, I'd say you should use differential braking anytime you need steering assistance. The class III Boomers are set up perfectly for this with the left side brake pedals. Even your HST cruise will not disengage if you press only one brake pedal. The tractor is designed with differential braking in mind.

I can always tell when my wife has been on our tractor. The brake pedals are locked together. She doesn't use differential braking and wants to not worry about stepping on both pedals. I unlock the pedals first thing when I get on the tractor after her.
