brakes on MF 135

I looked at one today, first time driving an older tractor and it was hard to brake. You had to take out of gear to get it to stop and stand up on brake pedal to get to stop quickly, it stopped pretty good once I did all that.....does this sound normal or are my legs muscles that weak?? thanks

When I first drove the 1964 MF135 diesel I bought in Jul06, the feel of the brake pedal was unusual compared to my other tractors--stiff and at a more vertical angle than I'm used to so you really had to lift your rear end out of the seat and stand on the brake pedal. And the brakes were pretty worn. So getting my 135 to stop took some planning ahead. One of these days I'll do a brake job on my 135 and see if it makes a difference in the feel and the effort it takes to get that little beast stopped.

It does take a good bit of effort, mine's going to need a brake job soon as well. The angle of the pedals (straight down) doesn't give you much leverage from your seat to help apply them. Same with the clutch, good workout for the ol' maximus though.

Actually you get used to them quickly, and during winter I can turn mine around on a dime when in tight spots pushing snow with the split pedals.

breaks shouldnt be that bad. the breaks might need adjusting or new shoes.
