Did anyone check to see if the gearbox had oil in it? Some implements are shipped dry.

Guilty as charged...I did read it-but I sure missed that part!

Another possibility is that the shaft was bent.

If you bought a new unit with this damage, I would ask for a replacement of the entire unit. You bought a new one and it should be in perfect condition. Why risk further damage which might show up after the warranty expires.

That is a serious bend.
The dealer should take it back and give you a new one.
If not, I'd ask that they at least remove the stump jumper pan and the blades, checking the alignment of the bar that holds the blades. If that is not bent, then I'd establish if the noise was consistent with other cutters (these new gear boxes seem to have that whine at least when new), and then use it with the understanding that the gear box may not hold up into the future. That would be the dealers' problem to fix, IMO, and should be their offer to stand behind it.
Wish you well with this cutter.
These dealers usually have at least one bozo that runs a forklift like it were a bulldozer.

I'm not sure who makes the Frontier for JD. My Land Pride has a slight vibration as it's coming up to speed, more of a shudder than anything else as it accelerates. Once it's up to speed it's as smooth as anything with pivoting blades can be.

If you're getting a whine it's probably the gearbox if the pressure angles and contact points aren't right.

I'd look at it this way. Before the dealer returns the unit to you, listen to it running at their shop. If the noise is still there, there is either a problem with that particular unit, or it's the nature of the beast. Either way you're not going to be happy with it. There's a slight chance it may be the combination of that cutter and your tractor.

The worst of it is, you may be able to return this one, get something different altogether and have the same noise issue.

Listen to them run it, if they say "That's normal.." you have a decision to make, and not an easy one.
