On my 4720 there is a fuel pump on firewall of the tractor there is no filter between this and the tank. This design flaw allows trash from fuel tank to ruin this pump. Pump is only warranted 24 months mine had 27 months. Cost me 95.00 for new pump. I added a screen in front of the pump it is the inline one that you can see into and change the screen. Dont try to add a regular paper filter the pump is not strong enough to pull through it. Hope this keeps other folks from loosing 100.00 due to poor design. Also found a regular generic made by mallory diesel fuel pump at advance auto for 50.00. If I have to replace again that is what I will use. The pump is with there high performance section..

I added a filter to mine after I had my first failure. The second pump failed, and when I took it apart (very easily done) I found a piece of debris about the size of a grain of sand. I removed debris, cleaned and reassembled, installed paper filter, and no problems for last two years. I always keep a spare electronic filter on the homestead ever since I have needed a replacement many years ago. I have an electronic pump (15 years old with 15' cable and alligator clamps, and 3' hose already attached). You can remove lines and install in a matter of minutes.

What kind of paper filter? Dealership told me that it would not pull thru one. I would much rather have a paper filter. Did your pump work after you removed the sand or was it toast? Thanks Jim

Jim, it works fine, and it has been working like this for better than a year. The filter is mounted high on the firewall. I guess it is the "general" paper filter found at either Autozone or Advance. The plastic is absolutely clear, and it is not like the translucent types where you cant see the quality of the filter medium. I would suggest the paper type filter. If you have to replace you pump again, I would opt for the $53 type from any automotive parts store before purchasing the factory type. On the other hand, the factory pump can be taken apart and cleaned, where the "newer" aftermarkets are sealed. Maybe you can take your old pump apart, clean it, and keep it for a spare.
