Massey Ferguson 583 Brazilian made
I have a Brazilian made 2009 Massey 583 cab tractor that I have a couple of nagging issues with. The first issue is the lack of power steering at slow speeds. It’s seems to be worse when it gets warmed up. The other is the rear PTO shaft seal. It leaks just enough to aggravate the crap out of a man. I bought a new seal at my local AGCO dealer but after attempting to replace it I stopped. I’m not sure how the internals of this tractor works. We work and repair most of our issues on the other John Deere tractors my brother has but this little Massey is a little different. Any advice on these subjects would be much appreciated. I’m located in southern Oklahoma.

Could you take a picture of your PTO or what your concern is regarding replacing the seal? The parts book is pretty vague.

This was after I removed the plate that the third arm bolts to. Sorry for the late reply as I gave up until now and started trying again to replace. The ring in the pic with the flat sides just turns but doesn’t unscrew like I thought it would. It acts like it will pop out of there like it’s just covering the seal or holding it in.

I'm pretty sure the ring is the seal and would just pop out. It may take a seal puller, to get it out. Just make sure you have drained enough oil that it doesn't come pouring out, but I probably don't need to tell you that.

Thank you for the reply. I watched a video on you tube of a Massey 240 PTO seal removal. It looked identical to mine and the seal or cap with the 2 flat edges pops out along with the PTO shaft and bearing all as a unit. They just prayed the whole thing out . I’m tempted to try this. Thoughts?

Not sure you're going to get the bearing and shaft, nor do you want to have them come out.
Pry the seal out, install the new one and don't disturb anything.

I have another issue as well. I have a manual shuttle shift for forward and reverse on the left side of the steering column. I believe my neutral switch is going out because I have to wiggle between forward and reverse to start the tractor sometimes. Do you know where this switch is located?

Should be on the top shift cover
