Everyone says to break in a engine before switching over to a synthetic oil but nobody ever gives the hours they consider to be the break-in. So gimme your opinion on what you would consider to be the break-in hours needed on a Kubota 3 cylinder engine before you first change to a synthetic oil. I'll hang up and listen....

If it were mine. I would switch at the first oil change

Old timers talking. My latest vehicles came with synthetic, say to use only synthetic. Our latest tractors (except the Kubota engines) came with synthetic fluids everywhere, say to keep it that way.

When oil consumption decreases due to ring break in, and thus sealing, that would be the time to switch over.
Engines that come with synthetic oil were already broke in at the factory.
It's more of an issue on aviation air cooled engines that go into use during break in. Owner/operators are advised to monitor their oil consumption. When consumption stops reducing and stabilizes, that is usually indicative of the rings breaking into the cylinder wall.

2 of our 3 vehicle came with synthetic oil and only use synthetic oil.

I think the break in period is a myth!

If I am going to use synthetic oil, I put it in at the first oil change whatever the OEM recommendations are for first change. ON my Ferris mower with Kawasaki engine, it was 8 hours, on most tractors it is 50 hours, cars most now are 7500 miles or whenever the oil monitor says to change it and a lot depends on how you drive. My sister bought a new Honda CRV and at 7500 miles she took it to the dealer to change the oil (free first oil change) and they wouldn't change it. The oil was still clear, oil life monitor said 50% of life remaining. They said "Go drive it some more and bring it back when the oil life is 10% or less". Wife's CRV will be 1 year old in August and has around 4000 miles on it. I guess we will drive it till it says to service it even if it surpasses the 1 year a bit. I ran my 2007 Silverado about 16 months once on the same synthetic oil and it was still on the full mark and not very dark with contaminates. I didn't spend $25+ to have it analyzed, but I am sure it would have came back good to go for another year.

On most of my personal vehicles, I change all the fluids and lubes throughout the vehicle within the first 5000 miles. At that time, I go over to synthetics all the way thru from engine to diffs.

My commercial stuff, I go to synthetic at first oil change. As has been stated, there are a surprising number of vehicles that are coming out of the factory with at least a synthetic blend or even a full synthetic.

I got really sold on synthetics in my commercial semi trucks. In that case, the component manufacturers will extend the warranty automatically from 500,000 miles to 750,000 miles if I use synthetics. I just carried what I learned over to my personal stuff, and I run almost everything on full synthetics now. Just find a good product at a good value so you are not spending more than you have to.

Go with the SYNTHETIC at the first oil change say 50 hours if your engine isn't broken in by then you must be idleing it all the time. Also it helps if you put a load on the engine during that break in period also. Also go with the BEST AMSOIL or SCHAEFFER'S. And be set for life.

My Branson has the Cummins B 3.3 engine. I am a synthetic oil user. The oil change interval in the manual is 300 hrs. I called Cummins NA and asked if my engine would object to my using Shell Rot. T 5w-40 full syn oil.

Answer was sir your engine would "love" you for it. Just do it at the first oil change interval. So I did.
