I have a new 100hp tractor on the way and the dealer tells me he needs to break it in on the dyno before I get it.

Is this normal procedure or is he out joyriding in my new pride and joy?

Ive never heard of this before.

It used to be fairly common, but I have not heard of it being done much in recent years. Usually the way it was done was to put it under a heavy load on the dyno and let it run at pto rpm for 1 to 2 hours. The original thinking was to make sure the rings seated properly, but on modern engines it is not supposed to be neccessary. I won't hurt the tractor and if you can arrange to swing by while they are doing it you can find out exactly how much hp your new tractor really has.

BTW: the owners manual on MF 5455 recomends working the tractor hard the first 50 hrs to break the tractor in. It also recommended that it not be run at high rpms unless it was under a load.

I bought my 125 hp Case-Ih last year and they ran it for 2-3 hours on a dyno. It is probably the best way but most dealers don't have any way to break them in (or want to take the time or expense). I just happened to stop by when they were breaking mine in. Didn't even know they were going place it on a dyno. The dyno ran off a pto and was mounted on a trailer. It had water running through it. I assume the water was to keep the dyno cool but don't know for sure. It looked like an older machine. It seemed like they were running it at pto speed. They told me it ran at varying loads. It was running at pto speed when I saw it and at moderate to heavy load.

G'day every new tractor we sell (and some s/hand ones ) go onto the dyno for at least an hour preferably 2 we do this for a couple of reasons 1, to make sure you are getting what you pay for (hp wise last tractor we sold was a merlin advertised at 95 hp put out 112 on the dyno :D) 2, modern engines are normally run up on a dyno at the factory so you don't have to run them in but then they go and fit them up in the machine and then paint them all smells awful when you are operating a new machine and has been known to cause some alarm at operators thinking their nice new shiny machine is going to burn to the ground:eek:. We run the dyno out the back of the w/shop and for the first hr some one stays with it monitoring gauges and varying load on the dyno and engine rpm's then if all normal the next hour at about 3/4 load and throttle. The dyno runs of the pto and is basically a hyd pump that has it's flow restricted and the pressure it builds up is shown on a gauge that has a hp chart instead of a pressure chart the water flowing through it is to cool the oil resevoir down as it can get extremely hot when it is running. If your dealer want's to do it before you get the tractor let him do it he prob won't even mind you seeing it done. Congratulations on the new machine hope you have many pleasant hours post us some pics when you get it :)

Diesels prefer to be put through a break-in period UNDER A LOAD. ("free revving" isn't good on a fresh diesel) A dyno is the best (most consistant/accurate) way to do that. Provided you have a competent dealer (service dept) I'd say they're doing just what you NEED to have done.
