A friend has a verticle shaft briggs (single cylinder) in a simplicity lawn tractor that seems to eat points. I know they used to make a small unit that mounted outside on the fan/flywheel cover and connected to the wire coming from the coil that converted small engines to electronic ignition. Are these still available, and do they work ?? Seems like they cost less then $20 when I last saw them..........Tom

Putting electronic ignition may solve problem. If points are going bad the same thing could happen to the electronic system. Has the condenser been changed on the engine. Also check for good ground.
Here is a link to an Ebay site that sells the kit. Don't know if it will fit your friends engine. Click Here

I have seen one that uses the points to operate an otherwise solid state system. It makes the points last longer by greatly decreasing the current in them. I can't remember where I saw it.
