Hears a few pictures of stuff I've been up to. I'm trying to get some pasture land ready for grass. Been pulling up stumps which the MF guys told me could'nt be done. I built a post hole digger a few years ago to help me build a barn. I did'nt have a tractor a buddy brought over his MF 431. It would only dig maybe 6" and the auger would only spin. My buddy cheerfully loaded his tractor up. I built the digger out of a 9" ford rearend and a auger that I had and an I beam. It was rumored that my enginering was to blame. I need to build a calve pen so I hooked up the digger to see what I needed to do to make it work. I turned the PTO on and it sunk the auger to the chunck bent the I beam as much as it could bend and then broke the PTO shaft. So all in all I found out that I had built a could digger and I pulled up a stump that was to big to fit in the loader bucket so I split it. Well you look at the pics.

Similar situation happened to me about a month ago. I borrowed a PTO auger from a co-worker. It's an older model and the PTO shaft was oval with two metal protrusions (thin lines) down each side.

He told me since it doesn't have down force, sometimes it needs a little pressure on it to bite. I was on the seat using the rockshaft to pull it up and drop it hoping it would bite. After about 10 minutes, I decided to take his advice. I climbed aboard the draft links then stepped onto the boom. The rockshaft was in the full down position. It sank all the way to the gearbox before I could get back on the platform and twisted the PTO shaft in half.

He has since rebuilt the PTO shaft using square tube on the yokes and I have used it quite a bit since then. Nice wet ground, it's a good time to sink some posts!

Turns out his auger bolt is a hardened steel bolt and the gearbox has a splined input shaft instead of smooth with a shear pin.

It's fun but, breaking other people's stuff is a hassle. He's a really cool guy and welded it all up and said, try it again. I think the PTO shaft was really too small for how much horsepower my PTO puts out. It was fine on his tractor though - stalled his engine a couple of times. Not mine!:D

Maybe it was...now this is just a theory... but you got a John Deere tractor and the digger had a Ford rear end in it. :D Cool idea though... wonder if I could do something like that with a cord wood saw. I've got a ford rear end with 2.78 gears available.

Whats a chord wood saw? If it looks anything like I think it does that should be rather easy to pull off. Its fitting the axle with a hub to which you can an arbor. reckon I'll go goggle a chord saw.

Yep thats what I thought. THat should rather easy to pull off. Thats a pretty good idea.

Oh, yes. Absolutely understood. I just was going to run down all the mistakes I had made in tearing something up hoping it would help one person not repeat mine!

I figured you did, just making sure. At work me and my buddy was talking about it. Another co-worker said they would'nt let me use anything of theirs. They did'nt catch that the digger was mine to begin with. I was just making fun of my buddies tractor.
