Does anyone have access to briggs and stratton repair manuals? Specifically, im interested in checking the governor adjustment on a 190402 8hp briggs engine. The engine was torn apart and replaced and i want to make sure i have the governor setting correct. Does anyone know what the proper method is aside from making sure all the rods and springs are in the same holes they were when they came out?

Have you tried the B&S website? Briggs & Stratton - Home

I looked quickly, but didn't find adjustment procedure. I did find the parts list and the owners manual (above)

Good luck, hope this helps.:)

Yes, i have tried that site. The thing is, what i want to check and adjust falls under the 'see your authorized B&S service location' type of adjustment.

I rebuilt my equipment with a short block from B&S, and i think the governor was already there from the factory, so really, i just need the max engine speed from a service manual so i can adjust my throttle cable accordingly. I want to get max power, but i don't want to overspeed it.

If you go to your local Briggs dealer for the manual I have found they are inexpensive. Usually under $10. and well worth the money.

This one will fall under the 'antique' repari book, which is about 20 bucks. Either way, if i could just get the value, i could be done with it. I don't rebuild these things often, so i hate to buy a book i wont need .

Attached is a PDF from manual part number 270962-1 / 92. I am in hopes that this will help you out. I think that the information you need is within this general coverage of different models.

That is EXACTLY what i need. Thank you VERY VERY MUCH! I swear i have seen this somewhere..but for the life of me, i cannot remember buying a service manual and i sure can't find it if i did.

After looking at it, i am working on page 11, Aluminum Model Series, 190000 specifically. It says to bend the tang to adjust the top speed. However, on my tiller, i can actually adjust the 'full throttle' position by loosening the cable clamp and pulling it back a touch to increase the RPM without ever messing with the governor.

Also on the notes fpr the speed in the table 4, what does 50 & 60 cycle mean, i assume its for generator. Either way, they listed 3 numbers for 190000 series motors. How do i know which RPM to use?

EDIT: After more research, those values are the MAX REV RPM, but not where i need to set the throttle. It appears that the accepted value for max throttle is 3600RPM. Also, my old man seems to think we have the manual you PDF'ed, where, we are not sure.

Thanks again for taking the time to get me that info, i greatly appreciate it (and so does the tiller).
