Many a citizen died in air raids there, built war materials etc. and probably died without any government subsidy, the taps or a flag at their burial.

Something I learned from my older sister who was born in 1938 just a year ago.
My dad worked in a machine tool factory during WW-2 and for around 45 years total.
Sister said that during the war he only came home on weekends and would sleep all weekend!
The plant was less than 5 miles from our home!
They must have put in some unbelievable hours!
He died in 1984 and I never heard him talk about it.
We will never see that era's work ethic or dedication again!

I would say, I hope we never see that eras work ethic or dedication - for the same reasons.
Remember, anybody old enough to work in the factories, munition plants or other war related industries were old enough to have lived thru the great depression also.
They had witnessed our countries economy go to H*LL in a hand basket AND then get drug into a World War.
They had plenty of incentive to work long and hard.

I loved that book. I remember reading it as a 13-14yo... I was up in my room and had reached the point when the torpedo struck -BANG!!!- my Mother had dropped a roasting pan in the kitchen.
It took a loooong time for my heart to calm down.

Saw the movie Dunkirk, I recommend it to everyone. The stoic-ness (not a word I know) of the troops, both French and English, and others I'm sure, and especially those Spite-fire fighter pilots. Makes me wonder just how well I would hold up under those conditions.
