i am planting my cover crop ASAP.
i am using a broadcast cone spreader, how fast should i be driving?
i have a Hydrostat, i am thinking High gear, PTO @ 540rpm

The manual for the spreader should have that information. You may need a GPS to get your speed, if you don't have a speedometer on the tractor.

Otherwise, you will have to just try different speeds and settings. It's probably cheaper to start off with the flow out of the spreader set low. Then slowly open it more until you get the coverage you want. It's much easier to add more than to pick up seeds from the ground! (Joke).

I like to apply at 1/2 the rate and make 2 passes as 90 degrees angles.

Have fun!

Check one of these manuals...
Spreader B30 (839 KB)
Spreader B50 (1401 KB)
Spreader B-80

Then read the STATIONARY TEST...in any of the three manuals...:)

I don't have a hydrostatic but isn't there something on your tractor that you can relate to speed? If so you don't need a GPS. Measure out about 300' and time how fast it takes to go that distance. Do this for a couple of speeds then throw the data into a spreadsheet and you should be able to calculate your speed. On my tractor I took two gears that got me approximately the speeds I would need for things like spreaders and timed myself at three or four rpm setting for each gear. Now all I have to do is plug in a speed and it can tell me the rpm needed in that gear to achieve that speed. No computer or spreadsheet then a calculator pencil and paper will sork just fine. Much cheaper than a GPS especially if you don't already have one.

You asked how fast. My pull behind spreader shows settings for 3mph ground speeds.

I think one of the easies ways of using a spreader to plant seed is to work out how much seed you want to put down on the area.

Then put that all in the hopper and set the seeder to a really low application rate. Set the RPM's to 540 and drive. It doesn't really matter how fast or slow you go.

First drive up and down over the area. Then go accross and back. Then go diagonally, then go around the outside a few times. If theres anything left, drive around a bit more.

This way you get a very even coverage. It does take a bit longer but not much on a small area. If you were doing 10's of acres then you would want to work it out a bit more exactly like other have said.
