First of all, this is not my tractor...

I had saved the picture after emailing the guy to see how this happened. Its a real heart breaker... Maybe the owner is on tractorbynet, I don't know, and am sorry if you didn't want anyone to see this...

I must have looked at it 15 times in disbelief, so I figured I would share the misery...

Can anyone guess how he said this happened??

With the gasket sealant on the other parts I would say it was put together wrong and something jammed up and forced it to pop

I'm really sorry for teh guy this happened to. Since I've run a 2120 for ver 20 years I was quite interested. I looked on Messick's site and that case may be a $2500 part all by itself. I hope I have the wrong case identified.

If I guess right, do I get a prize?:D

Since this is the casing for the drive going to the front differential, I'd say that most likely the front differential "cratered" while the tractor was moving, causing the driveline to lock. If the tractor was in motion and/or the engine was at normal operating speed, the torque to this transfer case was too much and it gave up.

I suppose a really odball scenario might be that the owner was using his tractor on pavement and forgot to disengage MFWD. When driveline windup got out of control, the transfer casing just let go.

Okay, one more...
The operator tried to shift into MFWD while in motion and the stress was too much for the casing.

That's my three guesses.:)

AndyMA: That's the casing under the transmission that transfers power to the front differential. The driveshaft is encased in a hollow tube that you can see going off to the left. If you got the price for the main transmission housing, you are correct. Then, you would have to pay for the disassembly and reassembly, probably driving the cost up to $5000 or more for this repair. If the front differential did crater, then that would add additional cost. I think PineRidge is right...we're lookin' at a lotta money.

I had to fix a different brand tractor that was broke almost identically like that at my last dealer job. The man was dragging some logs through a muddy spot and at a pretty fast speed when he started spinning. He just pulled the 4 wheel drive handle without slowing down and that's what did it. The front tires by then were on solid ground and the back was spinning in a high gear. You wouldn't believe how many pickup transfer cases I've rebuilt or replaced for the same thing. It doesn't take much to blow them up when one end is moving and the other is not.

Can it be fixed by welding it??

Since its a 'Nice' breakout, pull it apart, degrease it, warm it up and weld with A/C and nickel rod. I've done that a few times to castings such as this. The nickel is so strong and hard that die grinding it smooth can be a chore. Heat, weld, grind and paint. What's the problem??

If you can't weld, take it to a local high school night class in welding and learn how to do it.

The nickel rod is expensive but worth it. Die grind a bevel at the edges to be replaced by weldment. Then pour it on like butter. If it breaks again it won't be anywhere your welds.
