Tractor
Deutz Allis 5220 w FEL and Backhoe
Short Recap.

I bought a Deutz Allis 5220 ( Same tractor as the Massey 1020) Tractor with FEL and BH. 600 hours on it. Decided since it was new to me to change all the Fluids. Priced out the HST and HYD filters. $225 for both. I matched up wix filters( on my own since there was no cross for those). Changed engine oil and filter, Then Changed Hyd/Drive oil with my filters. When I was all done. Tractor wouldn't drive right. Weak, no power to wheels and PTO would spin slow. Tried to Bleed it, It got better then no go. I said ut oh, Burned out the HST with the mixed filters. Put the originals on. No better. Tried couple days later seemed ok. I finally broke down and bought the $225 filters (Both). Put them in, Worked kinda ok, little while later no go.

I was able to catch a peek and noticed the shaft out of the clutch was spinning slow.

Hmmm. Took off the FEL and BH. Split the tractor and Guess what????

A F'en mouse nest stuck in the clutch pressure plate. The pressure plate wasn't releasing all the way.

What we figured. Behind the bell housing with a open area before the HST pump. Some how the mice got in there. The made a nest. Well there is 4 quarter size hole between this area and the clutch area. They are access holes for a socket to unbolt the HST pump. The more we used it, the more that must of gotten sucked into clutch area. It was only luck of the draw if it would release enough to work that day.

The friction plate looked like new, the pressure plate with about 30 min of cleaning look great. Cleaned everything up and it works great. It works better then when I first got it.

It wasn't a new mouse nest as it seemed like alot of rotted material. I got a shoe box worth out of it and alot more blew out with a blow gun.

Well lesson learned.

I would say what a relief but splitting is a pita too.

Splitting the tractor wasn't that bad. It was about 2 hours to split and 3-4 to put it back. The FEL is pretty much self unloading but it wasn't on level ground so it was a pain. The BH came off pretty easy though. All in all, I'm glad it's solved so i'm not afraid if it's gunna work or not.

Having had many such problems with mice getting into places where they cause problems, I've become very critical of designs which don't take into account mouse entry points . That goes for machinery, cabinets, appliances, furniture, etc. As I find such entry points, I block them with rat wire , or simply close the entry points entirely. Sadly, even covering a machine with a tarp creates sheltered mouse homes, so it's a tough battle.

How did you split it? Is there any one with a video? My PTO quit working and I've been told that it's the PTO clutch and has to be split to get it fixed. It's a Deitz Allis 5220. Any information about it would be a great help. Thanks
