Well I really screwed up this time. I just bought my
1510 about a month ago. This Friday I bought a new
36" WAC tiller for it. When I hooked it up I noticed that
the PTO shaft was a little on the long side but I was too
eager to try it out. I made my first pass on the garden and
at the end of the row raised the tiller. What followed was a
series of noises and a tractor that would not move without
stalling out. What I damaged was the PTO drive cluster. The
yoke on the PTO shaft drove it's self into the rear housing and
in turn forced the drive shaft inside. I cut new splines on the
imput shaft inside the gearbox. What I need is a little advise
on finding replacement parts. What I would really like is a
used PTO gear cluster rear housing and all. Does anyone
know where I might find one of these. I'm new to Yanmars
so I don't have the first idea where I can find parts. Are
there other modles that would have the same driveline parts
so I can widen my search? The 1510 has the shuttle shift so
that may change some options. Thanks for any and all help.

Doohhh!!!!!/w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif I'm sure you're not the first or last to do that one. Hopefully some of the dealers in this group can hook you up with some parts.

I would call your tractor dealer first and let them know what happened. They should provide numbers of parts sources, or possibly some parts available. Otherwise call a dealer on this board.

Many of the pto gears for the 1510 are no longer available. We can have the gears machined at a local shop.

Thanks,
Bruce

If you do end up getting the gears machined then make sure they are made out of the right steel and not just what they have at the shop. This will have a big effect on the life of the gear train. Too hard or too soft and parts wear out fast. Even if you cant get the parts you can sometimes still find out the material specifications. Make sure you carefully compare the shape of the teeth and all measurements too. Some of these can be fussy to set up on the gear cutter but its important to do the job right.

How can you tell the PTO shaft was a little on the long side. In a year or so I'm going to be spending (big) bucks on a good finish mower. I want to make sure it fits right and will not damage my tractor. thanks, brettw

Raise & lower it with pto off. It should not bottom out. If it does you need to shorten it.

Brett, PTO shafts are what I call "universal un-fit", - meaning they don't fit anything when you buy them. They are telescoping 2-piece shafts and are always provided for maximum length. After cutting them roughly to length you make a mark on the inner showing where it bottoms out. Then check that the inside shaft is short enough that the telescope can't possibly bottom out when lifting the implement.

Dave, I'm just glad that you didn't get hurt. My own philosophy is that any time you find yourself looking at a handful of twisted metal is a good time to be thnking about just how much force it took to do that.....and congratulating yourself for being one lucky guy.

Well hopefully I can find the used parts I need. Does
anyone know of a source for the gasket that covers the
rear end. I guess I can just seal it up but if I can find
that gasket it would seal much better.

The point about universal un-fit is absolutly right. I'm new
to tractors and do plead a little ignorance. Is there any
problem with just hacksawing off the required amount off of
both ends of the PTO shaft?

Thanks
Dave
